If you are struggling to get your child's school to help you with identifying or diagnosing a disability, getting the school to either create or implement effective supports or accomodations for your special need's child, or if you feel that your child is being mistreated/targeted at school as a result of their disability, you are not alone and you have the right to have a disability advocate with you at all times during in-person meetings and to share all information with that advocate so that they can help.
As the mother of a child with special learning needs who is now about to graduate high school, I have been through the full gambit of special education battles with various public school districts over the years. As a result, I have learned how Special Education departments work and most important, how they don't work. In the last ten years, I have advocated for students in the following school districts and helped to faciliate responsive resolutions for parents and children: Dallas, Denton, Fort Worth, Krum, Sanger, Lewisville, and Argyle. What makes me the most effective as a Special Education Advoacte is not only my thorough understanding of the law in terms of yours and your child's rights, but I also understand what school districts don't want you to know in terms of their legal obligations to your child, and even more important, I know how to create and advocate for solutions where there seemingly are none so that school's are required to take action.
In terms of actual services, I am often able able to help by simply listening and providing feedback/recomendations regarding the effective options available to you and your child, advising you and your child on your rights and the best ways to assert them in various communication settings with the school/district (including at ARD or Annual/Renewal/Dismissal Meetings), but I am also especially efficient and pro-active in ARD settings. As a matter of fact, I currently have a 100% success rate in terms of facilitating beneficial outcomes for the child in ARDs and I currenlty have the longest ARD meeting on record with the Texas Education Agency (10 consecutive business days in 2014). This is a testament to my resolve in these often incredibly emotional and belittling meetings, as I never quit advocating and will fight as long as it takes to get a positive resolution for you and your child.
Let me know if I can help you.
